Caller id spoofing is when someone changes the number that is displayed on your caller id to be whatever they want. Over the past week, i have been getting strange calls from random numbers all over the United States. They all say the same thing, “We saw you called earlier, What did you want?” However, I have not called any of these numbers. Finally I asked one of the people who were calling me what it said on the caller id. She then told me that it read “Esta Sol – my number”. Apparently this lady has been receiving calls from “my number” repeatedly all week. This leads my to believe that someone is caller id spoofing and using my number as the fake number. Does anyone know anything about this, or anything I can do to stop them from using my number?? PLEASE HELP!!! I am getting desperate

the name that appears on the CID display is not sent from your phone… the name that appears on the CID is obtained from your telephone number from a CNAM database that the person that you are calling to telephone company uses…

you can call metro PCS and have them change the name that appears on the CNAM database that they use, but if you call someone with a different carrier the updated information may not be available right away… (example if you called someone on verizon it might not appear right away with the updated information if they use a different CNAM provider)

Isn’t it illegal for telemarketers to spoof their numbers so that you can’t identify or call them back?

Yes I am on the Federal Do Not Call List, but if I can’t trace these people (they hang up if you ask for a company name) and I don’t have a valid phone number,I can’t really report them. It seems to me that telemarketers feel free to break laws with impunity, figuring that if you’re going to charge them you have to catch them first.
If they don’t want to be arrested, dkk–they shouldn’t break the law. That simple.

The feds aren’t even enforcing their own laws. Where I come from it IS illegal to try to disguise their numbers or fail to identify themselves.

It is possible, but not necessarily illegal.
The are sites that offer “caller ID spoofing,” all it does is allows you to change the caller ID to whatever you’d like.
There are cards you can buy to do this from those sites, they’re not illegal, and they’re pretty commonly used. They do cost some money though!
