When is sick humor ever appropriate?

I personally enjoy sick humor but it seems that people get offended like about the numerous Steve Irwin (Croc Hunter) jokes that some are making. I’ve seen jokes on here posted about Princess Diana as well and people take offense. I enjoy the comedy of Ricky Smiley from BET’s ComicView. He is known for his sick humor types of jokes about death, church, funerals, old ladies and making prank phone calls. Why does it only seem okay to poke fun at people when they are alive but when they die, it’s totally wrong?
