What makes people’s voices change as they age?

We all know that the voice of a 70-year-old is different from that of a 35-year-old. What exactly causes a person’s voice to change as he/she ages?

Vocal cords are like violin strings. With a violin, you can greatly affect the sound by the quality of the strings and the tension on them.

As we mature the cords thicken like toned muscles…which is why our voices get deeper as we become adults. Over time they stretch and become less flexible (just like all our other parts). They also no longer heal themselves and sometimes become frayed (just like old violin and guitar strings).

The loss of flexibility causes the voice to lose strength while the fraying causes the “scratchy” quality often heard in elderly peoples’ voices.
