Recording Phone Calls…?

I recently heard a comedian (TOM MABE) that records his inbound phone calls from telemarketers and plays pranks on them. How is this legal? As a kid I used to have friends literally pay me to do this (before caller id). To be honest, I was pretty good at it. While I have no desire to make money, I’d love to do this and record for my old friends to listen to. Is this legal? What type of equipment would you need that is not real expensive?

a couple things first.

Prank calls are illegal. Harassment, menacing, disturbing the peace are common pleas that the police will use to stop the prankster.
In some states, recording is illegal, in most states, only one party need to know that the call is recorded.

To monitor/record is fairly easy if you know how the phone works. If not, then you need to buy an interface.
Check out www.ramseyelectronics.com for little circuits. Also, Radio sHack sells a tape recording interface. Instead of a tape deck, you can use the sound card in your computer and save the files as an MP3.
